a new selection ~ Winslow Homer Landscape Set
On view at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum, Philadelphia, PA, the "Fox Hunt" painted by Winslow Homer in 1893, was his largest oil painting to date and his first in a major American museum collection.
Primarily self-taught, Homer departed from an earlier 20 year career in illustration to take up painting in oils but did not develop a mature style until a move back to his home in Prouts Neck, Maine, in the mid 1880's, embarking on a period of intense observation and isolation in nature well into the following decade.
Winslow Homer's close study of Japanese woodblock prints is evident in the stark beauty of this work's exquisite composition that carries the nuances of color he included from his watercolor palette.
